The mapping software then uses your selected fuel type to generate the most efficient route. You can drive safely, ignore roads, park, race on a circuit, and travel around the world. Users can also select the kind of car they use, with petrol, diesel, hybrid and full electric the four options. The new feature will highlight routes that use less energy if they have a similar ETA to other alternate routes.

The feature was trialled in North America last year and will be introduced across Europe in the coming weeks. Google is adding a new function to its Maps app that will show electric car drivers the most energy efficient route as an option.
